About & Cultural History
Dhakeshwari National Temple (ঢাকেশ্বরী জাতীয় মন্দির) stands as the principal center of Hindu worship in Bangladesh. Built in the 12th century by King Ballal Sena of the Sena dynasty, legend holds that the deity was discovered hidden ("dhaka") in the surrounding forests, giving the city of Dhaka its very name. Rebuilt and renovated across centuries, the temple complex features four matching 16th-century Shiva temples, a central shrine housing the deity of Goddess Dhakeshwari, and peaceful courtyard grounds. As the designated National Temple of Bangladesh since 1988, it serves as the premier hub for community gatherings, interfaith dialogue, and cultural preservation.
Festival & Annual Puja Celebrations
The annual Durga Puja at Dhakeshwari Temple is Bangladesh’s national focal point for festivities. Thousands gather for Mahalaya, Kumari Puja, and the grand Bijoya Dashami procession. It is also the starting point for the annual Sri Sri Janmashtami Shobhajatra.
